Pumpkin puree

Cooked, mashed pumpkin sold canned — not the same as pumpkin pie filling, which already has sugar and spices mixed in. Plain puree is the base you season yourself.

Pumpkin puree

Used for

  • pumpkin pie
  • baking
  • soups
  • pancakes

In the kitchen

  • whisk into batter
  • simmer into soups for body
  • check labels — don't confuse with pre-spiced pie filling

Picking it at the store

  • Double-check the can says '100% pumpkin' or 'pumpkin puree' — 'pumpkin pie filling' is a different, pre-sweetened product sitting right next to it on the shelf
  • Homemade puree is wetter than canned — drain it in a strainer before using in a recipe built around canned
